SILENT NO MORE! - The Cost of Cultural Compromise

silent-no-more-wayne-edwardsFor the last 40 years, “Confessing Christians” have become fearfully silent regarding the advancement of secularism and evil in our society. Some Christians have been silent because they have a false view of what it means to confess Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord. They see their faith in Christ as their ticket to heaven when they die, but not affecting their lives until they die. Others have been afraid to speak out on the divisive issues because of the possible repercussions they might receive for speaking out, including the loss of friends, status, jobs or even their lives, as we see today, even in America.

The time has come when Christians can be "silent no more"! Unless Christians push back on these issues today, regardless of the consequences, America will soon become totally immersed in socialism, our children and our grandchildren will grow up in communism. Unless Christians speak up in their churches today the "Confessing Church” will soon be silenced by government decree, as it was in Germany in the 1930’s, and as it today in many parts of the Middle East.

Jesus admonished His followers to be as gentle as lambs and harmless as doves as they served as His witnesses in and to the wicked world. As Christians, we are not to meddle in worldly affairs, force our views upon others or bear ill against those who differ with what we believe. However, in 1 Peter 3:15, the Apostle Peter said, when God gives Christians the opportunity to speak, we are not to shrink back in fear of repercussions. We are to boldly profess our faith before others and leave the results to God. What was true for the first-century Christians is true for Christians in what appears to be the final century of the church age. We must proclaim the truth of the Kingdom of God until His Kingdom comes.

In that regard, there are ten areas of the Christian Faith where we must hold fast, regardless of the consequences. Why? Because the cost of compromise will be much greater upon our children and our grandchildren than the cost of our convictions will be to us today. Those over 50-years of age have seen America move from a “Christian” nation, at least in its principles of government and individual liberty, to a “post-Christian” nation, as the precepts of the Bible are being replaced with the tenets of secular humanism, and now to an “anti-Christian” nation. The federal government seems to be doing everything it can to silence the teaching of the Bible and to squelch the influence of Christianity. This decision was not by "edict", although we are seeing such autocratic restrictions being applied today. This drastic change came by "default”. Rather than stand firm in their faith, Christians have acquiesced; compromised their convictions, and as a result, we are living in a morally corrupt culture comparable to the days of Noah and equal to Sodom and Gomorrah, which means God’s judgment is very near.

To be clear, I’m not suggesting Christians fight back against the flood of sin in the power of the flesh. We tried that in the 70’s and 80’s and, while it helped elect amoral leaders to public office, it did little to change the direction of our moral compass. My challenge is for every true, born-again believer to stand firm and speak out on these ten essential issues that define our Christian culture, or prepare to answer to their children and grandchildren whey they didn’t. The ten issues are:

The inerrancy and sufficiency of Holy Scripture

The existence of an All-Powerful, Triune God –

The Biblical Account of Creation –

The Sanctity of Human Life –

The Biblical Institution and Definition of Marriage –

The Deity of Jesus Christ –

The Biblical Definition of Salvation –

The Church as the Body of Christ –

The Nation of Israel as God’s Chosen People –

The Restoration and Preservation of America’s Heritage –

Ten years ago, I published the cry of my heart in the book, “Raising the Standard” – one pastor’s plea for a return of righteousness to the Church. While it received raving reviews from those who are now among the “remnant”, it was also maligned and ridiculed by those who did not have the spiritual discernment to see the long-term effects of trying to adapt the essential doctrines of the Christian Faith to befriend the un-churched culture. Now, ten years later, according to the most recent poll by the Pew Research Center, Christians are leaving the faith in droves, and the trend isn’t slowing down. If current demographic trends continue, Islam is expected to catch up to Christianity midway through the 21st century.

We cannot be silent anymore. If we are to preserve the shards of a ruined society for our children and grandchildren, Christians must stand up and speak up, for our silence in such a time as this, is deafening. Recently, God flooded my mind with this thought:

The Church of Christ is growing where the blood of martyrs is flowing.

But where the grace of God is cheap, the power of the gospel is weak, and the

Name of our Lord is dishonored.

There is no human solution to our situation. Unless God intervenes, the America we all love will be no more – it will be defeated in war, forfeited due to debt, or absorbed into the global economy as a 3rd world nation. If we are at the end of what the Bible calls the “times of the Gentiles”, and I believe we are, and if we are living in the “last days” before Christ’s return, and I believe we are, and if we are in that final countdown to what Daniel referred to as “God’s Appointed Time”, and I believe we are, then the deliberate and intentional weakening of the most powerful Gentile nation on earth is part of God’s final plans to bring this age to a close.

Obviously, the United States is not mentioned in Biblical prophecy. But that doesn’t mean America is not referred to, or that it will not be a part of the end-time events, for indeed it will. Some see America as the “Babylon” of Jeremiah 50 and 51, not only because of its military power and financial power but also because of its location. In Jeremiah 51:13, the prophet referred to the “rich Babylon that lives beside many waters”, who “made the whole earth so drunk, they have all gone mad”.Think of the corrupt culture America is producing, promoting and distributing throughout the world through the various media outlets. Rather than being known as the people who worship the “Great God”, we are known as the “Great Satan”, and we are exporting that evil to the world. In Jeremiah 51:30, speaking of the army of that “end-times-Babylon”, the Prophet said: “Our soldiers have become like women". Could that refer to homosexuals or women serving in combat? In Jeremiah 50:9, Jeremiah said this “end-times-Babylon” would be “attacked by arrows from the north, with her judgment rising as high as the clouds.” Could that refer to a nuclear attack from Russia that is north of us?

Some prophecy scholars see the Babylon mentioned in Revelation 18 as New York, the commercial capital of the world. In Revelation 18:4-15, the Bible says that in one day; in one hour, that Babylon will be destroyed, and the nation’s leaders weeping and mourning.

This prophecy could not have been fulfilled prior to 1950. With the proliferation of nuclear weapons on the black market, only God could be holding back the Islamic Terrorists from setting off simultaneous nuclear explosions in New York, Washington, Tel Aviv and in many other cities, all at the same time. This massive explosion is the event they have been training for and planning to carry out since Osama Bin Laden declared his jihad against America.

Another “veiled” reference to America is in Ezekiel 38, where God said through the pen of his prophet, that Russia will lead a confederation of Muslim nations to invade Israel. If you have been watching the news, you have seen this confederation being formed, with security agreements being signed between Russia and Iran. One would think if Russia or Iran attack Israel, America would be the first nation to come to her aid; that’s what President Obama told a Jewish audience this year. According to Ezekiel 38, Israel will not be helped by anyone: God will defend Israel! God will destroy the armies that try to invade her, as well as the cities from where those invaders came. God will do this to reveal His glory and His power to Israel.

silent no moreBut why wouldn’t the U.S. give Israel aid? Could it be by this time, America has been neutralized and rendered powerless to prevent it from interfering? Vladimir Putin is on the march, fulfilling the dreams of the Russian Radical Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who said Russia’s survival depends upon their ability to secure the oil in Israel, and that is Russia’s goal – to take ownership of the mineral resources and the oil and gas discoveries in Israel – to expand the Persian Gulf.

I not a prophet – I have no more insight into the future of America than what has been revealed to me by the Holy Spirit through the study of God’s Word. But I am a patriot, and I’ve always been extremely patriotic, which is why I weep when I think of the future of America. I was privileged to grow up in some of the greatest days of our nation, and even as evil as it is today, there is no other place on earth where I would rather be living.

I believe God established America for His purpose, and it should be obvious to everyone that His hand has been on this nation for these 238 years. But America has rebelled against God. We have told Him we no longer need Him in our lives. While their decision did not reflect the hearts or will of the people, those nine people who make up the highest court in our land told the highest God in the universe that He was “not wanted” in our public schools. And God has been lifting His hand of protection and provision from our nation since that iniquitous day.

Do I want to see a revival? Of course, I would, but that’s entirely up to God’s sovereignty. However, if it comes, I believe it will be after a time of judgment that brings our nation to its knees, or leads us to the final agenda of the New World Order.

When we repeat the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, we are linking arms and hearts with those who followed God’s direction in founding this nation, as well as with those who died defending it and protecting it from its enemies. But seeing what has happened over the last 100 years; how the sinful culture has had more of an influence on the church than the church has had on the culture, the blood of those who died to give us this freedom cries out: “Is this what I died for?”The same could be said of Jesus, Who gave His life for our sins; that the barrier between God and us could be removed; that we could enjoy real intimacy and absolute oneness with God the Father. But as our Lord looks at our lives from the inside out; weighing our life goals and our life desires with His; evaluating our life choices with what He has called us and equipped us to do; viewing the things that have absorbed our time in light of the work He has assigned us to do, could our Lord not ask that same question: “Is this what I died for you to do? Are you truly following Me or have you honestly forsaken Me?”

America did not begin as a unified nation. American started as a family of people from various backgrounds, yet with a common dream of becoming that “city on a hill”. America was to be a lighthouse to the other nations of the world of what it means to live in liberty, to be free to worship God, to have a place where His Word could be read, taught, and told to others, and then sent to people around the world. Just as the nation of Israel had to answer to God for breaking their covenant with Him, God is going to hold America accountable for turning our backs on the One who made us and has preserved us as a nation. Those of us who are privileged to teach and preach the Word of God will be held to a higher judgment.

I can’t say God is finished with America; that decision is above my pay grade. But I can say this because Jesus said it in Luke 13:55: “Unless ye likewise repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” If America is to be saved, it will not be by might or by power, but by the Holy Spirit, saith the Lord! If America is to be saved, it will not be by legislation but by intercession. If America is to be saved, it will not be by military determination but by broken-hearted consternation – we must fall upon our faces before God and WEEP!

If God would restore the soul of our nation, it will begin with our sincere, godly sorrow over our sins, and that includes crying out unto God for His forgiveness, His mercy, and His grace. We need to beg Him prayerfully to spare our children and our grandchildren from the judgment that rightly belongs to our generation. Our repentance may not cause God to withhold His judgment from our nation, but repentance is the only thing that could. Without God, we can do nothing. Without us, God will do nothing. Therefore, it behooves us to return to God, and His promise is that He will return to us. He will extend His grace and His mercy toward those that fear Him; to those who keep His covenant, and to those who keep His commandments. Whether God will give America another chance is up to Him – whether or not we repent and cry out unto God is up to us. I urge true believer to assume the position!

I call each father, or the head of household to allow the Holy Spirit freedom to awaken you to the apostasy you have allowed into your own heart, and then into your family, your church, and therefore into the community and our nation. I beg you to allow the Holy Spirit to lead you to repent genuinely of your sins, so that you can honestly intercede in prayer for our nation.

It’s time to weep, dearly beloved! It’s time to humble ourselves before God and with each member of our family, and with our church family, and weep over our sins, and then the sins of our nation. For unless the unbelieving world sees us on our knees in respect before God, how can we expect them to acknowledge even Him?

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, theologian and Anti-Nazi Activists said, “Silence in the face of evil is evil itself. God will not hold us guiltless.” In Ephesians 5:11, the Apostle Paul wrote, “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.” Just as our silence is sin in the face of evil, so is our inaction in the face of doctrinal error. The Apostle said our Christian's responsibility goes beyond avoiding it; we are to expose it!

I realize there are Christians who are remaining silent on these issues because they do not think it is their place to speak out. They are unhappy with what is going on in our society, and they pray that God will cause something to happen that will restore our nation to its former days of honor and integrity. Even though they may be boiling over on the inside, for whatever reasons, they remain tolerant, compliant and silent. But as Bonhoeffer said, “not to speak is to speak”, and our silence has been construed as our consent.

According to a recent survey by Lifeway Research, 59% of senior pastors of Protestant churches believe the church is losing the culture war in America, and 11% concedes that we have already lost it. The most staggering statistic was that 70% of those pastors also believe our religious liberty is under severe threat, and 54% of Americans agree with them.

Over the last ten years, rather than confront the culture with the truth of God’s Word about the consequences of sin, and man’s need for a Savior, Christians have ceded the culture to the ungodly, retreated to its “Christian conclaves”, and complained about the increasing ungodliness of the culture. That’s defeat by default! That’s failure by forfeiture! And unless God intervenes, we may never be able to regain the ground we have lost. The question is how will we explain this to our children and our grandchildren?

Many pastors encourage their flock to get involved in the political process, and certainly, I would agree with their motive and intent. There are more than 80-million evangelicals in America, and according to the reports, only half of them are registered to vote, and only half of those bother to vote.

However, if you review these ten convictions, you will see the last one is the Restoration and Preservation of America’s Heritage. In other words, we can’t start at the ballot box and work our way back to the Bible – we have done that since the 70’s, and it hasn’t worked. We must start with the Bible, renew our personal commitment to its inerrancy, infallibility and its sufficiency, not only as it reveals to us Who God is, but who God desires us to be. Then from that, we can recognize the existence of an all-powerful, Triune God, who created all things by His power and for His glory, including every human life. He then partnered with man in the procreation of human life, and established the family for its nurture and education, including the Deity of Christ, the consequences of sin, man’s need for a Savior and Jesus Christ as the Savior man needs. Finally, we can see the Church as the Body of Christ and the nation of Israel as the channel through which God has revealed Himself to us, through the Scriptures and His Son, our Savior. Once we have our faith firmly set on the foundation of God’s Word, we can become the salt and light to our nation, and through our nation to the world. Even though it appears America’s future is bleak, and America’s churches are weak, no one has the authority to write our nation’s epitaph. As a nation, America is not mentioned in Biblical prophecy, and there are many false prophets proclaiming America’s demise. However, Christians are indeed mentioned in Biblical prophecy, and Jesus told us to “occupy till I come”. Too many Christians have been “on retreats” and “in retreat” for too many years. It is time for us to be “Silent No More”!

In 2010, speaking to a group of priests, Cardinal Francis George, the eighth Archbishop of Chicago said, “I expect to die in bed, my successor will die in prison, and his successor will die a martyr in the public square. His successor will pick up the shards of a ruined society and slowly help rebuild civilization, as the church has done so often in human history." On April 17, 2015, Cardinal George died in his bed, as many Christians are dying today; watching our civilization pass away without so much as saying one word to keep it from dying. I may die for speaking out! If so, so be it – at least I will not have to answer to my grandchildren as to why I didn’t. - wje
